Plant our quality Valerian seedlings and see how rapidly they grow in their first year. The advantages of planting seedlings over direct seeding are obvious when you see how well the established seedlings compete with weeds. The longer growing season in the first year gives higher yields in the second year when harvested. Reputed to be hardy to Zone 5, it has survived our winters well in Zone 3. Valerian is harvested for it large fibrous root mass which is valuable fresh or dried.
